gpi-anchor membrane lipid modification

Overview

GPI anchors are glycolipid modifications attaching proteins to the outer leaflet of cell membranes.

Structure

The conserved core structure is ethanolamine-PO4-Man-Man-Man-GlcN-acyl-PI, with variable side chains.

Biological Significance

GPI-anchored proteins include CD59, alkaline phosphatase, and prion protein. GPI anchor deficiency causes paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.
