S-palmitoylation attaches palmitate (C16) to cysteine residues via thioester bonds, regulating membrane association.
Characteristics
Unlike prenylation, palmitoylation is reversible, allowing dynamic regulation of protein localization.
Biological Significance
Palmitoylation regulates Ras signaling, receptor trafficking, and synaptic protein function. DHHC enzymes are the palmitoyl acyltransferases.
