prenylation lipid membrane modification
Overview
Prenylation attaches farnesyl (C15) or geranylgeranyl (C20) isoprenoid groups to C-terminal cysteine residues.
Types
- Farnesylation: CAAX motif recognition by farnesyltransferase
- Geranylgeranylation: Rab GGTase and GGTase-I modifications
Biological Significance
Prenylation is essential for Ras, Rho, and Rab GTPase membrane localization and function. Farnesyltransferase inhibitors were developed as anticancer agents.
