sumo post-translational modification
Overview
SUMOylation conjugates SUMO proteins (SUMO1-4) to lysine residues, primarily regulating nuclear processes.
Mechanism
The enzymatic cascade involves E1 (SAE1/SAE2), E2 (Ubc9), and E3 ligases (PIAS family, RanBP2).
Biological Significance
SUMOylation regulates transcription factor activity, DNA repair, nuclear pore function, and PML body formation. It is implicated in neurodegeneration and cancer.
